by Jaime GrossThis past weekend I attended Dwell's first annual Design Lab, which took over a raw penthouse space in the new Millenium Tower in San Francisco's SOMA district and spotlighted 13 local designers. (My colleague Diana Budds offers a good overview of the event here.) After a festive, Kim Crawford Wine-fueled Friday night reception, I spent Saturday afternoon wandering... weiterlesen...

Birding can be fun. Except when you have to get up early and it's cold. That's why Birding the Net may be so appealing to Internet surfers out there, especially those still wearing pajamas late into the afternoon. Just tongue in cheek, folks, this is about a new social media campaign by Audubon called Birding the Net. Virtual birds have been rele... weiterlesen...

Marine litter is a real problem, not just for animals but for beach goers trying to enjoy an afternoon in the sun and surf. A new smart phone app from NOAA helps you become part of the solution, by reporting where you're seeing marine litter pile up on beaches, waterways, and rivers. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

I admit that I like a Bloody Mary as much as the next person, especially on a hot sunny afternoon. It always seems like a very summery drink to me. It takes me back to carefree summer afternoons at my in-laws' cottage when we would sit under a tree looking out to the lake with a Bloody Mary in hand. In fact, I like the combination of the ingredients... weiterlesen...

Tim DeChristopher, 29, the courageous activist who posed as an oil industry bidder to monkeywrench an oil and gas lease sale in Utah, was sentenced this afternoon to two years in prison. "Mr. DeChristopher had many other lawful ways to express his disapproval with the oil and gas leasing process," said U.S. District Court Judge Dee Benson at the hearing.... weiterlesen...

To keep animals entertained at zoos and wildlife parks (something very important for their mental health), zookeepers often come up with rather ingenious toys that entertain both the animals and people. That's what's happened here at Durrell Wildlife Park when zoo keepers combined a camera and a treat box and gave it to a large silverback gorilla. T... weiterlesen...
by Jordan KushinsOn a drizzly afternoon in Holland's capital city, I took to the streets, armed with a map, a copy of a great little guide book, Amsterdam Made by Hand, and absolutely no problem getting lost along my way to discovering a few retail treasures. Here are a few shops I liked best.

by Miyoko OhtakeFor our new June 2011 Beach Houses We Love issue, I set up shop in a backyard with seven mini grills for an afternoon of barbecuing and product testing. These little charcoal cookers are great for tailgating and small gatherings, but what you really want to barbecue on on a regular basis is a Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet Hybrid grill.

Renowned author and primate expert Dale Peterson is out with a new book that is likely to change not only how people view animals, but evolution and our own moral code, as well. The Moral Lives of Animals is a good read, and Peterson is going to talk with me about it, right here at TreeHugger, tomorrow afternoon. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

by Bradford ShellhammerMeeting design legend Milton Glaser was one of those classic moments that can only happen in New York City. I was having lunch with Alan Heller—the man behind the furniture manufacturing company Heller Inc.—when he scribbled Milton Glaser's number on a napkin, insisting I meet him. I called Milton the next day, and in turn, he invited me to his ... weiterlesen...

In a move to end the shark fin trade within California, the state assembly passed AB376, on a 62-8 vote Monday afternoon, as TreeHugger Stephen Messenger reported. The bill still has to pass the Senate in order to ban shark fins from stores and restaurants, but it does not come without a hearty debate, none of which makes a lot of sense. ... weiterlesen...

If you like a little sugar in your morning (and late morning, and afternoon) coffee, but don't like the calories, there's a good chance you use one of the many artificial sweeteners on the market. But there's plenty of evidence that these various chemical concoctions carry some scary health risks with them, and that they're no good for the environment, eith... weiterlesen...
We enjoy great photography, and we really, really enjoy the DIY, made-by-hand culture that so often encompasses green values like reuse, repair, and longevity in goods. That's why the latest Pictory showcase is a must-see. Featuring beautiful images and captions about making things by hand, it's a perfect way to take an afternoon mental break. ...Read the full story on TreeHugg... weiterlesen...

One may deride the power of the mainstream media or pretend to ignore those papers that put up paywalls, but when the New York Times carries an article about standing vs sitting, suddenly standing desk stories are everywhere. One problem a lot of people have with standing desks is the fact that people already have desks, or that they want to move betwe... weiterlesen...
It's a double dose of exciting news from the Do Lectures camp today. In true double-barreled doing style they are launching their new super snazzy HTML 5 website to the world this afternoon, plus the speaker line up for Do 2011. The new site is apparently the world's largest responsive website on the internet. As you may know, the Do Lectures are the intimate but hugely inspiri... weiterlesen...

I believe it was just yesterday when I opened my post with "The sun is warming up, the robins are here, and my garden is growing...". Today, not so much. This photo is the view from my front porch this afternoon, after many, many hours of snowfall, that isn't due to end until close to midnight. Definitely a day for a fridge cleaning recipe....Read the full... weiterlesen...

Dear coffee (and afternoon hot chocolate, and commute-home latte, and after-dinner tea) addicts: We know its hopeless, you can't put that hot beverage down.
But the countless paper cups, cardboard sleeves, and plastic lids that end up in landfills every day -- well how about relying on a reusable mug? Not only are they less wasteful than paper, but they're more lik... weiterlesen...

It's not often that a book inspires you to go out and shovel steaming piles of horse poop on a cold November afternoon. But that's exactly what happened to me after reading Gene Logsdon's Holy Shit, and I mean it as a resounding compliment to the author. I should note, of course, that it doesn't take much to get me thinking, and writ... weiterlesen...
by Aaron BrittLittle throws the Dwell office into a tizzy of afternoon consumption than some toothsome confection (Full disclosure: Baked goods have a similar effect). Imagine then how popular I became when my desk played host to a chilled box of Commune Chocolates from Commune Design revealed 49 chocolates cut to look like Byzantine tiles. They were scooped up immediately, even ... weiterlesen...
